A day in Zaltbommel.

The following couplet from a children’s song indicates that Zaltbommel has always been intriguing:

“In the big city Zaltbommel, bommel, There was a major flood as water flowed down,
And so many poor souls, souls, Who couldn’t swim, they drowned”.

This probably has to do with its location, right next to the large Waalbrug connecting the areas north and south of the Waal; the view of the leaning tower and its location right on the water, which during high water provides impressive vistas.

Zaltbommel is perfect for a day out; you can reach Zaltbommel by bicycle after cycling a good 30 kilometre from Gorinchem. A delightful trip with beautiful views across the Merwede and Waal and the overflow areas. Or make use of the services of Riveer and take a ferry trip across the Waal and the Merwede to Zaltbommel, enjoying the water along the way. The busy traffic on the river is an adventure in itself, you’ll gasp at the enormous barges that pass by. You will truly understand why we say “Netherlands, Water Land”. How fantastic that such an adventure is so close at hand!

Once you have arrived in Zaltbommeltake your time; make no mistake, this fortress city has a story to tell and offers more than enough atmosphere, entertainment and good food and drinks to make up a well-filled day.
